When Daylight Saving Time comes to an end, it seems like the holidays start to take up a lot of time in our brain and in our lives. We plan and think about gifts, hosting, parties, cooking, and gathering with friends and family. In addition, as they days get shorter and cold weather moves in, we have to think about staying warm and preparing ourselves, our homes, and sometimes our families for all the challenges that come with winter in Iowa. It’s no wonder it can be a stressful time!
But staying healthy this time of year can be easier than you think. As you are making all the preparations this year, try to incorporate these things into your life to keep you and your family healthy through the holidays and all winter long.
- Get your flu and COVID-19 shots. If you do only one thing to stay well this season, make it this one! Getting your flu and COVID shots not only protects you, but it prevents you from spreading the virus to others who may be vulnerable – especially infants and people with respiratory health issues. Even if you do get the flu or COVID, if you received your shots, your symptoms will be far less severe.
- Wash your hands often. Germs are on almost everything we touch. Prevent the spread of those nasty germs by washing your hands with soap every chance you get and especially before you eat.
- Prioritize sleep. Make sure you are getting at least 7 hours of sleep each night. Children and teens need at least 8-10 hours of sleep. When you don’t get enough sleep, your body has a harder time fighting off viruses.
- Drink plenty of water. A hydrated body is a healthier body. Winter is a great time for hot cocoa and cider. But don’t let it replace the water you should be drinking! Strive for 6-8 glasses of water a day.
- Get a little exercise. Go for a walk after a big meal. Or start walking to the end of your block and back every morning. But make sure to dress warm! Don’t forget a hat. Your body has an easier time warming itself when you cover your head.
By doing these five things, you can ensure you will have a happy and healthy holiday season.
